Leaving Rapid City, SD
and it is September 23rd.
And it is still rainy and foggy but we decide to go back up to Mt. Rushmore and see what we can see, and we have the parking ticket yet. Bonus!!!!
It was a little iffy that we would see anything even in the daylight. Then TA DA, there they were.
Aren't they grand!!
Then we went toward the Crazy Horse exhibit around the back side of Mt. Rushmore.
What a lovely backside. Mine should look that good.
On to Crazy Horse
We followed the rain and fog. Once in awhile we could get a glimpse of the work going on. Yes, there were people up there, even in this weather, working on the statue.
This blurry white outline will be part of the horse's ear.
They must be pretty brave, wouldn't catch me up there.
This will be a loose interpretation of what I understand. If you want the real story, please Wikipedia it. It is quite a story. The monument was started by a man and later his wife. Then carried on by their children who still carry on today. We watched a film. One young man said he was working with a particularly large piece of "grading" (My rememberance) equipment and got a little close to the edge. Both he and equipment tumbled down the long side of the mountain. Thankfully still alive after his trip he was worried about the reaction of his father. Dad said, "You got it down there, you get it out."
This is not my picture. I borrowed it from travelblog.com through the net. This will be what the end product will look like. Do you see the horse's ear now?
They also have a visitor center, gift shop, etc. A BIG one
And we found these treasures after we left Crazy Horse.
We went through this little city. It was full of tourists and lots of cool looking stuff sitting out on the streets.
And we turned the corner and lo and behold there was Prairie Berry Winery
We had been seeing billboards all along the way so there was no way we weren't going to stop. It is the home of Red Ass Rhubarb Wine.
