Hello from York, Maine

Left Haverhill after visiting Marty's relations.  Headed toward Salem, Mass and went through house of Seven Gables.  We were going to the Witch House but went round and round trying to find a parking spot.  Salem has a big todo in October and especially on Halloween.  To bad we don't have time to experience that day, but on we go.

We headed up to Maine.  Took Route 1 up, what lovely country.  Nice 2 story houses, salt bogs, autumn trees.  It seems like one little town runs into another.  We had a little snag in Portsmouth, a detour that we couldn't figure out there for a moment.  Even "B in a box" didn't seem to know where he was going, or maybe it is just the imputer that has problems.

Made it to York, found a hotel and went to dinner at Ruby's.  I ordered nachos and Marty had a taco salad,  OMG, it was enough to feed a small army.

My son wanted a walking stick that touched everywhere we have been so I took it down to the Atlantic ocean and put it in the water at Plum Island.  I haven't seen this ocean up and down the coast but it doesn't seem to have the charm of the Pacific.  Just my observation.

Tonight I will show you a little of Mount Vernon.

This is the Potomac.  When I asked a passer by what this was he looked at me a little strangely.  I had to explain I was from out of town and didn't have a clue.

This is Mount Vernon and Bowling Green.  Washington wanted a pristine lawn and had a slave to take care of it.

This was the tree Washington planted in 1785

Washington was a consummate farmer who made money at it.

This 16 sided barn is a restoration.  The horses were put on the top level and went round and round stomping the wheat stalks.  The wheat kernels then fell though the cracks of the floor to the lower level.

This is a slave cabin.

He had his own forest

The wagon he rode in

Smoke house.  Shed he cured the meat in.  That is a barrel of salt.

The Accounting house.

I would think that they would have had a dock but I am not sure that it would have looked this modern.

We were told that there was over 600 hundred visitors to the Washington's home in a years time.  People would come to visit and sometimes they would stay for months at a time.  Free room and board, your meals cooked and served by slaves, your clothes washed by slaves.  Your entertained by a powerful family, the view out the back of the house was spectacular.  Why wouldn't you want to stay.

We were not allowed to take pics inside the main house.  But any where else on the grounds, which was huge, was fine.  So you will have to go there personally to see it if you are curious.

Love to all, until next time
