Left Fishkill, NY this morning and drove pretty much all day to get to Strasburg. We stopped at Antietam but the center was closed so we just took our own car tour. I am not sure how this war came about, I know who the players were, but not sure how it was played out so I need to do some research I think.
It was 34 this morning in NY and 81 in Virginia. It's hard to know how to dress. We also stopped at a falls in Pennsylvania and a water canal, you know those back roads that call to you, "Here, here we are. Come look at me".
Heading off to Front Royal tomorrow morning. That is the beginning of Skyline Drive down the Shenandoah mountain range. Hopefully the leaves will still be in color and on the trees.
There is still some color in the trees. On the freeway coming out of New York.
That is clouds hanging in the valley.
We came across some streams and some small falls.
And then we found this little treasurel Check out that silo!!!
A few more falls.
We did not see any major wildlife. Come to think of it, the minor wildlife was a little scarce also.
This was a water canal park. With some duckies.
A replica of the house the confederates burned because they thought the union would be using it. It was the Mamma house and farm.
This was built as a sort of look out tower and map room. There are 74 steps up.
This long strip was called Blood Alley, I think. I can only imagine why the name.
And finally, sunset on Antietam
We learned at West Point that they (the North) buried the cannon barrel opening into the ground with the back end of the cannon sticking up out of the ground. We also saw this at Antietam. There was a cannon barrel buried in a wall of cement with the back end sticking up in the air, (by the South). This war pitted brother against brother, families against families and a nation divided. The buried cannon is a symbol that there shall never again be another shot fired between the north and south.
Love to all, until next time
